Keep ‘em separated: Cellphones could erase Nissan I-Keys

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

f you have a 2007 Nissan Altima or a 2007 Infiniti G35 Sedan, you might want to keep your mobile phone in a different pocket than your car’s fancy I-Key fob. The fobs, as you’re probably well aware by now, enable and disable the cars’ keyless ignition systems. According to Nissan, the problem is that if the fob is touched by a cellphone while a call is in progress, the software that controls the I-Key’s automagic goodness can be altered or erased, rendering it useless. Furthermore, the damage is not reversible, and the I-Key simply becomes landfill fodder.

Nissan’s modifying the key to correct the issue, and will provide new ones to owners once it’s straightened it all out. According to the AP, this’ll happen sometime in the fall. In the meantime, some dealers are stocking up on spares just in case, and you’d be advised to follow Nissan’s advice and keep a little distance between the key and your phone. After all, you don’t want the simple act of pressing the Start button to turn into an exercise in futility — especially over something as mundane as checking your voice mail.

A garage must have!!

toolbox

For a lot of people, their garages are more than just a place to work on sweet project cars — they’re often the main hangout. They watch the game, smoke stogies, play cards, and enjoy the occasional pop while shooting the breeze with the neighbors.

With those people in mind, the folks over at Craftworks have designed the ultimate sleeper: a 4.4 cubic foot refrigerator that is a spot-on match for a toolbox. This incognito cooling device will keep your beer and soda nice and frosty for you and your friends, while serving as a terrific decoy when the spouse’s family comes over for a visit. The top of the fridge acts as a makeshift counter for when meal-building is in order, and a lock will keep unwanted guests out of your stash. The only problem with the Craftworks fridge is that it costs about $350, which is about three times what you’d pay at the appliance store for similarly-sized yet more benign refrigeration.

We like it anytime someone puts forth the effort to design some utilitarian decoration for our beloved garages, but we take issue with the contents in the product shot above. After all, who puts Slim Jims and peanut butter in the fridge?

Engine oil and other automotive fluid myths!! Part 1

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

A friend of mine at Valvoline wrote this and posted it on www.Lexistreets.com and i thought id share it with you.

Here is some clarification on common myths you will here about automotive fluids. This is not all but a few I type up today I will post more when I have time.

Engine Oil myths:

I have always heard that I can not switch to synthetic oil in older engines. It will cause leaks. True or False

False: Synthetic oils are formulated to meet all engine seal manufactures specifications for exposure. If the application is leaking then the owner may have not changed the oil as recommended by the manufacturer or used the wrong viscosity for extended period. If the vehicle is extremely old and has not been started in years then obviously you could need some seals replaced.

Some people say that the new API SM / ILSAC GF4 oils will not protect my older flat tappet / foller valve train set up. They also say you have removed all the zinc or zddp from your oils.

The oil industry per ILSAC had to only decrease the levels of ZDDP (Zinc) in certain viscosity to meet new emission standards. The ILSAC rated oils still have an average of .085 levels of zinc. Testing has shown on standard OEM set ups that used mild camshafts will still get plenty of protection from the new rated oils. There is an exception when it comes to extreme aftermarket applications. If you have a high performance solid lifter set up with an aggressive cam then you will need to use a quality Racing Oil or Fleet Oil for break in and normal usage. These oils have an increased level of Zinc that will range from .14 to .16 and will provide plenty of protection.

I need power steering fluid, so I should just get a product labeled as such.

NO: Always check your owner’s manual for correct fluid type. Some applications will require transmission fluid types or mineral oil. These fluids are some what similar but do have significant differences. Mixing them together could cause foaming and poor lubrication. Now you wander why you here a lot of pumps whining!

Performance Parts Zone’s year in review..

Thursday, December 21st, 2006

So, lets take a look back on what happened this year.

We started this blog back in May and have seen a sharp increase in daily readers ever since then, for those reading, thank you so much.  I started posting and wondering if anyone would read my ramblings and if you look around, theres some good stuff if i do say so myself.  We’ve got some comprehensive detailing guides, sponsorship advice, off the wall auto news, bad ass cars, and the occasional “Look what were up to at Injected Performance” post.  Anyways, i can’t thank you enough for reading.

2006 was an interesting year in both show cars and race cars, and quality of both increased dramatically this year.  Show cars got cleaner and race cars got faster.  8 sec turbo cars were the norm and 10 sec NA cars were common as well. On the show side of things, carbon fiber was king.  Audio/visual was a close second, but i see the crazy systems and 53243430498 screens in one cars going away in 07.  There was a lot more focus on JDM this year than i had seen before and i think that is going to be king of 07.  Less bling, more clean.  So many manufacturers came out with so much good stuff this year it was tough to decide what parts to get. Specialty companies were also a lot more prevelant this year than in years past with the trend towards niche markets taking a firm grasp on the industry.

Thats my condensed version of what went on this year, and ill probably write more later, but for now, lets hear your thoughts on 06.

Sponsorships, get your letters ready.

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

Some time back I wrote about what sponsorships are, the different levels of sponsorship, and how to go about getting them. You can find that article here- Sponsorship Truths.

Anyways, I wanted to remind everyone that the new year is almost here, which means you have to get your proposals together and get them out the door. The beginning of the year is when manufacturers make most of their sponsorship decisions, get yours in early, be sure yours is complete, and send lots of them out.  If your not sponsored yet, you may send out 100 proposals and only recieve 2 replies, dont get frustrated, just keep sending them.

For a last minute tip regarding what they want to hear, listen up.  The point of them giving you free or discounted performance parts, is to get their company name more exposure.  Make sure you can provide them with exposure.  Not only at shows and races, but online as well. For instance, if i post up your car here and list your sponsors, over 10k people will see it the first day its up.  Mention stuff like that, they want their name to be seen, make sure you can deliver and you will get the deals.

Its the weekend- Good time to install your performance parts.

Friday, December 15th, 2006

And if you dont have any to install, i just want to remind you all to check out Injected Performance. They are currently running some crazy Holiday specials that will be ending soon.

Ill be stuck in the office tomorrow, so while most of you all enjoy your day off, ill be here and im going to try and think of some good posts to make while im adding product to our other sites.

Have fun this weekend and be safe

 Justin
