Car Detailing Part 4: Wheels and Tires The last step I take in the exterior detailing of my car is doing the wheels and tires. To start I make sure the wheels are clean…if they aren’t you will just rub brake dust and road grime around, scratching the wheels. Now for wheels with painted finishes I use detail spray to shine them up. I spray directly on the COOL wheels and follow with one micro fiber towel, then come back with a fresh one to do the final polishing. For chrome wheels I use my window cleaner and use the same technique. Polished lips and polished wheels need to have special consideration taken for them. A polished wheel will probably require polishing after you clean the wheels, because if not you will use your luster and you will have MANY water spots. Choice of polish and technique is up to you. But for the polished lips I just use never dull wadding polish and a clean micro fiber towel. This seems to work fine and cuts out a lot of time and effort.
As for the tires, you need to make sure you have 2 things. 1.) a tire shine of your choice and 2.) an applicator pad. Countless times at shows I see people spray tire shine directly onto their tires. Please don’t do this. It gets all over your paint, the ground, your wheels and your friends cars. Use the applicator pad, you will not have nowhere near as much “sling” and the shine is a lot more controllable.
Okay your exterior is finished. All you have left is your interior and your engine bay, which we will cover in the next two lessons
